Firestarters Youth Group Tithing from New Orleans Fundraising

As most of you know, the Firestarters Youth Group usually tithes 10% of our major fundraisers to other charitable organizations.  We raised about $5,400 for the Jesus Justice and Jazz New Orleans trip this past summer….Thanks, again, to the congregation.  Therefore we are going to tithe about $540 to some organizations/ areas, which moved us during our time in New Orleans.  Please read the remainder of the article for the details.

10,000 Girls (10000girls.org) $200 dontation

Mission Statement :To offer education and employment opportunities for 10,000 Girls in rural Senegal, enabling them to develop as self-reliant and capable women, through a self-sustaining organization run by the girls themselves.

Who they are:  A registered and independently audited 501(c)(3), not-for-profit educational organization, based in Kaolack, Senegal, West Africa.  Founded in 2001 by an American grandmother, Viola Vaughn, who had relocated to Senegal, the 10,000 Girls program has earned regional--and now, increasingly international--recognition for success.

What makes 10,000 Girls different?:  We have proven results, broad local support, and the means for sustainable development. We not only keep girls in school. We also help them develop as career professionals, as entrepreneurs.

Patricia Ramsey, an expert in international development, credits 10,000 Girls with making "an outstanding contribution to development in Senegal."

This is the email we received for the donation:

Thank you so much for these funds.  We are succeeding.  Eighty two percent of our girls in the education program are passing their classes. The girls in the entrepreneurial program manage their pastry shop and catering services.  The sewing project is also selling their household linens and dolls. This summer the girls began a freight transport business, buying and selling agricultural produce.   In August of 2001, we had 20 girls in one neighbourhood around the Kaolack Commune. This year, we have 2,567 girls in six different towns in the regions of Kaolack and Kaffrine. We are also planning to add and additional 500 girls by year’s end.  We have had year round programming, and are beginning to support part of our costs.      Viola  Vaughn

New Orleans Recovery School District Fund - $200 donation

Education was one of the areas recovering at the slowest pace, still very much in need of resources.

Pontchartrain Park Neighborhood Association - $137 donation

Rebuilding homes for lower income folks was also well behind schedule.

Mission Statement

1. Re-establish the Pontchartrain Park (Home) Improvement Association as a CDC (Community Development Corp.) with it’s mission as follows:

b. Purchase ALL HOMES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SOLD BACK IN THE ROAD HOME PROGRAM; With a focus on re-populating those properties with first time homeowners.
